The German Shorthaired Pointer (GSP) was developed at the turn of the nineteenth century in Germany solely for the purpose of hunting. It is believe that there were quite a few dogs that went into creating this unique breed some of which include some German breeds such as the schweisshund, a German hound known for tracking, the Foxhound, different French hounds, assorted Scandinavian breeds, the German Bird Dog, and the Italian Pointer.

This breed is known for its ability to move quickly and with great strength. This is due to his very strong back legs that give him the ability to move rapidly and turn quickly if needed. His muzzle allows him to retrieve heavier game than most of the retrievers because it is strong and broad.

The German Shorthaired Pointer’s coat is water resistant due to his undercoat that is protected by guard hairs that are stiff. This also allows him to stay warm in even the coldest of weather. His color can vary, but is usually a dark brown, known as liver, black or both liver and black with some white mixed in. This mixed, darker coloring can make this breed harder to see in the winter seasons: a perfect dog for hunting without getting easily caught. When he is standing in snow and next to dead trees and shrubs, his white and brown coat camouflage him well.

The German Shorthaired Pointer can stand anywhere between twenty-one and twenty-five inches tall, categorizing him as a medium breed. Adults typically weigh anywhere from forty-five to seventy pounds and the female Pointer is usually a little bit shorter and slightly lighter than the male.

Although this gentle, obedient breed makes a great household pet, he needs to be trained at times to be affectionate and not “always on the hunt”. They are also very intelligent and bold. Generally speaking they are easy to train, but need a lot of attention as they can be easily distracted due to their superior scent ability. They have a tendency toward being stubborn, so early training is a necessity. Inherently, they are bred to hunt, so the ability to get much exercise and keep a high activity level is very important. He needs constant jobs to do due to his intense activity level. For everyday family life and having a GSP as a pet, this breed is recommended to be a friendly, fun and loyal addition to the family, who tend to be protective of young children. However, great care must be taken around young children because of their high energy and activity level.

If the German Shorthaired Pointer seems like they are hyperactive or very destructive, it is probably due to a lack of correct training or a lack of plenty of exercise. This breed develops very strong attachments and bondings with their owners and the families they are with. However, if they do not receive the correct amount of exercise, they will take it upon themselves to be sure that they do and thus have a potentially destructive tendency.

As the GSP is a large, active breed, the dogs can require quite a bit of food; however, they can also become obese if fed too much for individual activity levels. A healthy weight is that the last two ribs should be able to be felt under the coat and the dog should have a distinct and defined waist. Recommended feeding for the German Short haired Pointer is one and a half to two and a half cans of high-quality meaty product with biscuit added in equal parts or five cupfuls of a complete, dry dog food.

As you have probably already learned, Pit Bulls are highly energetic animals. They love to run and play, and get excited easily. One of the more annoying habits they develop at a young age is jumping. Jumping can be particularly annoying when they do it as a way of greeting, especially if it is young child or someone who is afraid of dogs. Teaching your Pit Bull to curb this behavior is not an easy task, but is your responsibility as a Pit Bull owner.

Many people have stopped their Pit Bulls from jumping on them by using treats. When they come inside, they throw some treats on the floor, and then greet their dog while his attention is fixed on the treats. The treats usually work as a good distraction to pull your Pit Bull?s attention away from jumping on you. If you don?t like using treats to train your Pit Bull, or if the method just doesn?t work well for you, then you have to try other ideas to train your Pit Bull not to jump.

One thing you can try is teaching your Pit Bull that it is nicer to sit than jump. Go outside, leaving your Pit Bull inside, then come back in and calmly greet him. If your Pit Bull starts to jump on you, turn your back to him, and ignore him. When your Pit Bull puts all four feet back on the floor, turn back around and pet him. If he starts to jump on you again, turn back around and ignore him. This will teach your Pit Bull that when he jumps, he doesn?t get any attention, but that if he sits nicely you will pet him. This technique may take quite a while for your Pit Bull to learn, especially if he is a very excitable dog. But, if you stick with it long enough, he should learn that jumping is not going to gain him anything other than losing your attention. Once you get your Pit Bull thru this step, try to teach him to sit still for a few moments before you acknowledge him. If he gets up, use the same routine of ignoring him, and then when he sits down, pet him again. This would also be a good time to try to teach him to shake hands when he greets people, rather than jumping on them.

You can also further entice your Pit Bull to not jump by tempting him and then rewarding and praising him for his good behavior. Hold treats up in the air so that your Pit Bull will have to jump to get them. If he jumps, ignore him, and when he is calm try again. When he is able to remain seated, praise him, give him the treats, and some extra attention. He will soon learn that by behaving the way you want him to, he will not only get extra attention, but some extra treats as well, which is double incentive for him to obey.

Another method that tends to work well in teaching your Pit Bull not to jump is to have a designated place for your Pit Bull, and teach him to go there when you need him to, for example, when someone is at the door. To start this training, you will need to pick the spot, and put maybe a bed or blanket and some of his favorite toys there. When the spot is ready, spend some time with him while he is there. Giving him special attention and treats will help him attribute the spot as a good place that he wants to spend time at. As your Pit Bull becomes accustomed to his place, start sending him there occasionally. At first, you will want to be close to the spot, and eventually move farther and farther away from it as your dog learns. Make it a point to give him special attention and treats each time he goes to his spot when you ask him to. Eventually, your Pit Bull will learn that by going to his spot when you ask him to, that you will reward him for it.

The biggest thing you can do to help your Pit Bull learn not to jump is to keep your own greetings calm. I know it is hard when you have been away from him all day not to come in and play and wrestle with him, but this will only get him more excited, and he will expect this same attention from everyone that enters the house. Until you can completely break the jumping habit, it may be best to ignore him for the first few minutes you come home, and then play with him once he settles down. It may take a little time, but your Pit Bull will soon learn how to tone down his excitement.

My dog is a chow australian shepherd mix, should you cut the hair short in the summer?

I adopted a Chow Australian shepherd mix dog from the animal shelter. She is 2 years old. Should you cut their fur for the summer. She was upset at the vets first visit, so she doesn’t like strangers that much. I was wondering,Should I get her professionally cut, or should I do it myself? Thanks for any help!

Groomers like money, but the only genuine reasons for clipping a dog are:
(a) When a vet needs to clear an area to operate or to clean up a wound.
(b) When a long coat is so matted that you can’t release the knots with a bath + a comb out.

All else is stupid fashion.
The original pompom cut still seen on many Poodles was practical – in those days those dogs were tossed overboard to retrieve the rope tied to the fisherman’s lost net. You might have noted that dogs with wet coats shake when they stop galloping around. Clipping such dogs reduced the amount of water they could spray – the bobbles were left in hope of keeping those joints warm & dry and thus delaying arthritis.

So it is important that dogs ALWAYS have access to drinking water, in order to keep their passages moist to promote cooling. When over-heated they, like us, enjoy a paddle or a swim in cool water, which cools them via the naturally exposed skin of feet and armpits and belly+groin. Dogs die very quickly from heat-stroke when left in a vehicle on a summer’s day.
Removing the coat removes the INSULATION a dog REQUIRES to protect it from the heat of the sun’s rays and to protect it from the UV radiation that produces both sun-burn and skin cancer, so is a VERY BAD IDEA!!!!!!

The personality of a lively child put into dog- this might be a good way of describing the general personality of terriers. But as it appears, that still would not justify their temperaments.

These dogs came from the British Isles where they were first oriented to hunting fox, rat, otter and the likes over and under the ground. And as its name suggests, ‘terrier’ came from the word ‘terra’ which means, ‘earth’.

While terriers may be identified through their prominent physical characteristics, they are still divided into various breeds that separate one kind from another.

The following are the subgroups of the terrier breed:

Show Terriers- These are basically bred as small dogs and are used for show rings.

Bull and Terrier Types- these came from breeding between bull dogs and terriers. Only in the last quarter of 1800’s did the breeders separate a number of bull dogs from terrier types for distinction.

Hunting and Working Terriers- The breed that was primarily bred for hunting.

Toy Terriers- These are the smaller versions of terriers, which are basically categorized into the companion breed.

To help you understand the various natures of terrier dogs, we have prepared some dog profiles here, please read on.

Airedale Terrier- This is known to be the largest dog in the Terrier breed. Standing an average of 23 inches from the shoulder, this dog shows off both beauty and elegance that make them fit for both dog obedience trials and show rings.

A cross-breed between Otterhound and Black and Tan Terrier, Airedale possess good skill in scent and superb swimming prowess.

Australian Terrier- Probably one of the dog types that have gotten to so many out-crossings with other dog breeds. A cross breed between the forerunner of Dandie Dinmont and rough coated terrier is said to have been migrated into England. The offspring of which was taken to Australia. With the scarcity of dog breeds in this land, many dogs had been crossbred into it which later resulted to a small type having the characteristics of terriers while being a good watchdog and ratter. It stands 10 to 11 inches with a life expectancy of 12 to 14 years.

Border Terrier- A True-blue working terrier, this dog is marked by its medium built while proving to work far better than what its appearance may give. Border Terriers are agile and alert while having the capacity to fit into narrow gaps especially during hunting.

Aside from its being affectionate and good adaptation to training, Border terriers can also make good family pets.

Bull Terrier- Originally bred for dog fighting and bull baiting, this dog is known to have been well-accustomed to courage and good resistance to pain. However, when the bloody dog fights were banned in England during the 1800’s, most breeders turned to breeding milder dogs.

Bull Terriers came from these fighting dogs combined with Dalmatian and English Terrier to produce all-white specie. This new breed though is very much reserved from starting fights which gave them the nickname ‘White Cavalier’.

There are of course a variety of other terrier species. Initially, you might find them interesting enough to catch your attention but a closer look would lead you to further knowing them. Who knows, you might find your ideal type of dog in this breed.

For nipping you can:

1) Walk away. Ignore her. She’s obviously biting because either a) she was taken from her litter too early to develop the grasp of consequences of biting or b) excited play, aggression, dominance.
When she bites you, stand up and walk away. Continue to do this to show her that whenever she bites, she drives you away, which is something dogs do not want.
2) Yelp! Each time she bites, retract and go “AH!” or cry like a dog would.
3) Use a bottle of water and spay her each time she bites. Dogs like Poms generally don’t like water, and she will relate biting to that punishment.
