I have just acquired an 8 month old intact male cat, he’s adorable except when he gets a whiff of my neutered female cat (they are kept separate until he gets “done” tomorrow) I am just wondering how soon after neutering will he stop showing so much interest in her?
Right away, he’s going to be hurting a few days, the vet will tell you to keep them apart for prob 7-14 days depends on the vet. If he has mated in the past there can still be times he smells something and tries but nothing will come of it. I have 6 cats, 2 males, 4 females and one of my males every so often will try to mate with one of the females, he did mate in the past. The other male is fine. It’s a natural urge, but nothing will come of it, prob the female will slap him and growl or spit like mine does, and he’ll stop.

So, I am eight months pregnant and obsessed with getting my home ready for my new baby. Apparently this is a completely normal and, if my pregnancy books are correct, a scientifically proven reaction to being on the brink of bringing a new life into the world!
Most moms-to-be have this ‘nesting instinct’–see, there is even a somewhat scientific name for this craziness. But it does make perfect sense. Baby ready to come, mom needs to have somewhere to put the baby. But a simple room won’t do.
Oh no.
I need a brilliant, beautifully colored and gorgeous nursery for my new prodigy. And this is where my dilemma started.
I’m pretty careful about all things. I want no trans-fats, no toxins, completely sustainable, healthy for my planet, eat-local-act-global (you get my drift) products and have been doing a ton of research on all things related to my family and new baby. So in this vein, I did some reading on child safe non toxic paint. I always knew that I wanted a low odor paint, because somehow that ‘fresh paint smell’ has never really smelled that ‘fresh’ to me, and I was a bit dubious about what I was smelling anyway. And I am very pleased that I looked into this.
Apparently paints contain VOCs, volatile organic compounds that are not so great for the environment–they cause smog and affect the ozone layer–but are even worse for your home environment. The VOCs and toxins in these paints greatly reduce the air quality in your home and can lead to horrible things like throat, eye and nose problems, headaches, and even cancer. So while I am planning on being all natural with my baby’s diet, I realized that it would be for nothing if I didn’t paint his room with a completely zero toxin paint.
I also read that pregnant women shouldn’t paint or be in the same area as those who are painting rooms, as it can affect your unborn baby. Made me really think about the threat that these paint fumes would be to my completely unprotected, new offspring sleeping peacefully in a crib in a newly painted, poisonous room.
Thankfully, there are new paints available that are completely free of toxins and are totally child safe. Look for the zero VOC, zero toxin products opposed to the ones that are low in VOCs or low in toxins. Some manufacturers are less than truthful with the way in which they communicate their ingredients on their labels and put the number of VOCs per liter as opposed to the actual number in a gallon–the normal size of a can of paint.
The smell is also something that I was right to be wary of. I learned that the smell of new paint is actually the solvents evaporating into the environment. These solvents are the things that contain the toxins and carcinogens, so the smell is not a good sign. Go for low odor–everything has an odor so you are not going to find a zero odor paint–but if it has zero toxins and zero VOCs on the label the low smell that you get should be safe anyway.
The new paints have a reputation for not being as good as the old reliable, poisonous paints. However, there are a few new companies out there who are really doing the research on this and are finding completely new ways to create paint. These guys’ durability is as good as, if not better than, the traditional stuff. Many of them come in a huge variety of colors too–so don’t feel that you can’t have the nursery of your dreams in any color or colors that you want because you want to be healthy. Just do some research and you’ll be safe!

What is a good software to draw cars on a mat which connects to the computer like a sketch pad?

Uh..
Well, if you want to draw on your computer like drawing on a piece of paper, it’s not really an application that will make the difference but a piece of equipment, such as a Wacom tablet; they have an entry level 4X5 pad that goes for $99. There’s other manufacturers, but you’re not gonna get it much cheaper than that.
However, fully reading your question, supposing you *already have* such a piece of hardware, next is the application.
Well, generally speaking, you would prefer an application that has multiple layer support, can render good brush (i.e. airbrush) effects, can give you straight lines (as needed), smooth circles, pressure sensitivity, fine-tuned scaling/rotating and editable line paths (i.e. vector drawing). Sadly, I haven’t seen one app that has it all like that.
Sketchpad Pro 2 (by Alias, the makers of Maya–the crucial 3D app for Pixar) has just about everything above except that it isn’t vector and everything is drawn freehand (you can do lines with the Shift key, but no circles). The latest Flash has just about everything above, but it does kind of ‘correct’ lines drawn, which annoys me..and their closest thing to good, airbrushed-like lines is their new blur feature. Of course the proverbial illustration application is Adobe’s Illustrator, but from the little I’ve experienced of it, the learning curve is fairly stiff…but it might be worthwhile as it is an industry standard.
But those cost a pretty penny (I’ve only used them at school).
A couple of freebie apps to check out include PaintDotNet and GIMP; they each have merits, but free often translates to limited functionality and lacking technical support. Of these two I’d lean towards PaintDotNet because it was originally Microsoft’s baby and intended to upgrade and replace the even more limited MS Paint, but the development didn’t complete by the time of Microsoft XP’s release.

How thought provoking a piece of art can be depends how open you are to the message an artist is trying to tell you. The most artistic work from the 19th century to around the 1970’s was called “modern art”. This approach had artists displaying their emotions and abstractions on canvas as they were able to veer away from the traditional concepts of painting that had been used since the Renaissance era. During the second half of the twentieth century, modern art turned its name more towards contemporary art. Contemporary art encompasses all art being done now. It tends to include any art made from around the 1970s to the present, or after the end of the modern art period. When talking about art, modern is not used as a synonym for contemporary. The art that was first defined as modern was the art of the first half of the 20th century. Futurism, Cubism, Constructivism are all parts of modern art. Contemporary art is exactly what the name says, the art of today or the very recent past. Characterized by no real common ground, contemporary art offers a wide range of styles. Since World War Two, art movements have included Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, Post-modernism, Minimalism and Feminist art. The number of art movements has grown so much that virtually every year avant-garde movements with new names have surfaced in the art world. One movement that dominated contemporary art for several decades was one of the movements I just mentioned, Abstract Expressionism. Artists in this movement felt that the expression of their feelings was the main reason for making art, and the art they made generally had no reference to anything in the external world. Although many people love modern and contemporary art, there are some that do not think of it as an art. These viewers think of art as being something like portraits or landscapes….something recognizable. When modern and contemporary artists create something that makes them think, something that is not easily recognizable, then these viewers reject the idea of this even being art. After reading through a survey concerning Contemporary art, I noted one quote regarding the matter. She states, “I just don’t think it takes any great talent to spatter paint on a canvas (Jackson Pollack) or paint cubes (Various Artists). How does one discern any meaning to such things? It is like the ink blots during a psychological exam? How do tell good splattering from bad splattering? It’s much easier to look at a painting that gives you some sort of idea of the message it’s trying to convey.” So similar to abstract art, it is more about understanding the concept and knowing about the artist and their artwork to truly grasp the meaning of what they are trying to portray. So for today’s world, we will try to enjoy what contemporary art brings us. We will learn to interpret what contemporary artists try to portray with their work. Art is a form of expression, a mode of communication that is supposed to convey some sort of message from artist to viewer. How that is done is up to the artist, and how the message is received is up to each individual viewer.
