What are some modern drawing styles?
I really want to get better at my drawing. In art class we talked about past drawing styles like Pop Culture drawings and portraits from centuries ago. But I’m wondering what’s the big modern drawing style of today? If you could send me some links that would be awesome (:
I don’t want to get into contemporary labels but… look at Jasper Johns and Jim Dine for a modern academic style which uses some abstraction but shows texture and form wonderfully. For a psychedelic style look up Victor Moscoso — who is famous for his posters and Underground Comix in the sixties but taught at the San Francisco Art Institute and has influenced many people since. There is one gallery painter whose name I’ve forgotten Moscoso influenced. Painter Jim Nutt and Cartoonist/Illustrator Gary Panter use a comic-book influenced style not all that different from Doonesbury. Except they’re better (ever notice that when Gary Trudeau wants to do more serious drawing and designing his work always gets very very dark? I sometimes wish the next time he decided to get serious he’d hire Michael William Kaluta to ink him so we could see what he’s drawing).
There are anime and anime-influenced artists out there, but the comic book artists Frank Miller and Walter Simonson managed to be influenced by Anime without creating work that was in any way derivative.
