During the evolution of a fine art photographer when does their work move from naive to sophisticated?
As an investor or collector what do you look for?
In your opinion, did your favorite artist experience an epiphany or a graduation? Does it matter?
When the art makes that change has got to be one of the most subjective points I’ve seen discussed here. A friend of mine told me once that he shoots only B&W because people often use color as a crutch in their photography. The point that a photographer makes a statement like that, or finally decides their art doesn’t depend on the lasted toys from Nikon or Canon, I think, is the point that it shifts. There are a lot of amazing artists that, in their profession, rely on the latest technology for things like portraiture, nature photography etc. But the true fine artists that use the same Nikon F-1, or large format box camera they built themselves, have reached a level of sophistication in their art beyond the latest technology.
